My Excuse to Succeed

About the Project

“My Excuse to Succeed" began as a personal journey through New Mexico with my wife on her first visit to the United States, yet quickly transformed into a documentary exploration of the lowrider culture of Española, New Mexico. Long fascinated by the unique visual and cultural phenomenon of lowriders, I had never pursued it until we unexpectedly encountered a group of locals proudly gathered around their iconic cars. A few impromptu photos led to a connection with one of the car owners, who shared news of an upcoming gathering, sparking an irresistible opportunity to delve deeper into this distinctive world.

What began as a photography opportunity soon evolved into a broader narrative. Conversations with lowrider owners revealed their reflections on life, heritage, and the spirit of Española. My original intent to capture the aesthetic of lowriding gradually shifted to focus on the lives and perspectives of two men, whose roots in Española shaped their character in ways that profoundly resonated with me. Their connection to this place not only defined their identities but offered me a chance to re-examine my own.

Project Summary

This exhibition aims to bring the vibrant, lesser-known culture of the Southwest into light, a window into the life and artistry that defines a unique aspect of Americana. Lowriders and their creators represent a cultural identity sharply distinct from mainstream perceptions of American life. Through this collection, I invite viewers to experience the nuances of this community, understanding the cars not just as vehicles but as profound expressions of resilience, pride, and artistry.
